Frequently Asked Questions – Parent First Aid

How long is the course?

Our Parent & Baby First Aid course typically runs for 2.5 to 3 hours for group sessions.
Private sessions can be adjusted to suit your needs and schedule.

The focus is practical, hands-on learning — no long lectures, just real-life skills you can use immediately.

Is this course certified?

This course is a practical Parent & Baby First Aid training session designed specifically for parents, carers and grandparents.

It is delivered by a qualified First Aid Response (FAR) instructor, following best-practice emergency care guidelines.

If you require a formal workplace qualification (e.g., PHECC FAR), please see our certified First Aid courses.

Can grandparents attend?

Absolutely.

Grandparents, childminders, babysitters and anyone caring for children are very welcome.

Many families choose to attend together so everyone feels confident in an emergency.

Is this suitable for newborns?

Yes.

We cover emergency situations for newborns, babies and young children, including:

• Infant CPR
• Choking in babies
• Fever management
• Allergies and anaphylaxis
• When to call 112 / 999

The course is especially helpful for new or expectant parents.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes.

Participants receive a SkillWise Parent First Aid Certificate of Attendance upon completion.

Please note: this is not a workplace certification but a practical skills course for parents and carers.

Where is the training held?

We offer:

✔ Small group sessions in Roscommon (10 minutes from Roscommon Town, 20 minutes from Athlone)
✔ Community group sessions across the Midlands
✔ Private home sessions
✔ Online live sessions for parents who prefer to learn from home

We regularly welcome parents from Roscommon, Athlone, Longford, Westmeath and surrounding Midlands areas.

Can I bring my baby or toddler to the training?

For safety and learning reasons, we kindly ask that toddlers and young children do not attend the session.

The training is hands-on and requires full concentration while practising CPR, choking techniques and emergency scenarios. To ensure everyone feels calm and focused, we recommend arranging childcare where possible.

For parents of newborns, please contact us in advance — we will always try to accommodate feeding mothers where practical.

If childcare is difficult, private home sessions may also be an option.
