Course Overview

The SkillWise Patient Moving & Handling Course (also known as People Moving & Handling or Patient Handling Training) provides healthcare workers with the essential skills required to safely move, lift, and transfer patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and home-care environments across Athlone, Roscommon, Longford, and the Midlands.

This course blends theory, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, ensuring participants can:

• Move and handle patients safely

• Protect their own musculoskeletal health

• Maintain patient dignity and comfort

• Use patient-handling equipment correctly

• Comply with Irish legislation and HSA guidelines

Training meets the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, the Manual Handling Regulations 2007, and current HSA patient-handling standards.

• What is patient moving and handling?

• Why safe patient handling is essential

• Irish legislation and employer responsibilities

• Managing patient manual handling in healthcare

• Anatomy, posture, and back care

• Biomechanics & common injury mechanisms

• Ergonomics and TILE risk assessment

• Safe use of hoists, slide sheets, and transfer equipment

• Fitness, flexibility & injury prevention

• Principles of safe patient movement, lifting & repositioning

• Practical demonstrations (inanimate + real patient-handling techniques)
