About the Course

The aim of this PHECC First Aid Response course is to provide learners with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to respond safely and effectively to emergencies in the workplace, home or community setting until emergency medical services arrive.

This PHECC-approved standard combines practical hands-on training, CPR skills, AED awareness and scenario-based learning to prepare participants for real-life emergency situations.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this PHECC First Aid course learners will be able to:

  • Deal with life-threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions in the pre-hospital environment until the arrival of emergency medical services

  • Provide First Aid Response for conditions that are not immediately life-threatening but require care to prevent further harm

  • Perform Adult and Child CPR

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

  • Assist a casualty suffering from choking, heart attack, stroke, burns, bleeding, fractures, seizures and other medical emergencies

  • Provide pre-hospital First Aid Response in workplace, home, recreational and community settings

  • Demonstrate confidence, composure, communication and safe patient care

  • Understand the responsibilities and limitations of a First Aid Responder

  • Recognise situations requiring additional specialist assistance or training

The FAR standard is recognised by many workplaces and organisations and is recommended by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC).

Course Duration

18 hours delivered over 3 days using a blended learning approach, including approximately 7 hours of video eLearning followed by classroom practical training and assessment.

Assessment

Learners will complete:

  • Practical FAR skills assessments

  • CPR assessment

  • AED skills assessment

  • A 20-question multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ)

Learners should also allow additional time for revision and practice in preparation for assessment.

Certification

On successful completion of the course, learners will receive a PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) Certificate.

Certification is valid for 2 years.

This course is delivered using:

  • Instructor-led teaching

  • Practical demonstrations

  • Scenario-based learning

  • Hands-on CPR and AED practice

  • Classroom discussion and assessment

The course is highly interactive and active learner participation is required throughout.

Course Access & Language Requirements

To ensure the greatest opportunity for successful participation, learners should have a good command of spoken and written English.

Learners whose first language is not English may be asked to provide evidence of language proficiency where required.

Participants should also be physically capable of carrying out practical skills such as CPR.
