Cardiac First Response - 4 Hour Course

Aim
The aim of this Community First Aid course is to provide learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills to respond confidently to everyday medical emergencies at home, at work, or in the community.
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess an emergency scene safely and effectively

  • Perform adult and child CPR

  • Recognise and respond to cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke, choking

  • Demonstrate safe use and awareness of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

  • Place a patient in the recovery position and provide basic care until emergency services arrive

  • Act calmly, competently and within their skill level in a wide range of community and workplace settings

Course Content

  • Scene assessment and personal safety

  • Adult & child CPR

  • AED awareness and demonstration

  • Responding to Choking, Heart Attack, Stroke, Cardiac Arrest

  • Recovery position

  • Basic patient care until professional help arrives

Assessment & Certification

  • Assessment is through practical demonstration and a short multiple-choice test

  • Certificate issued by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC)

  • Certification valid for 2 years

4 hours (half-day)

  • On-site training at your venue (schools, community halls, workplaces)

  • Public sessions available at our Roscommon Town training space

Who needs to take the course?

  • Emergency services and healthcare: Paramedics, nurses, doctors, healthcare assistants, and other healthcare professionals are often required to have this certification.

  • Community and volunteer groups: Any group that wants to be linked to the National Ambulance Service as a Cardiac First Responder Group must complete the CFR Community Course. This includes community responder groups and volunteer organizations.

  • Workplaces and public settings: Employees in public or workplace settings are often required to be trained, particularly those in roles like designated first responders or security staff.

  • Sports and recreation: Sports coaches and members of sports clubs need this training to respond to emergencies that may occur during events or training.

  • General public: The course is open to anyone, including parents, teachers, and the general public who want to have the skills to respond to a cardiac event.

  • Specific roles:

    • Security staff

    • Event medics

    • Family members of individuals with known heart conditions

    • People who want to teach the courses (instructor level)
