What is Patient Handling & Moving?
Patient handling (also known as people handling) refers to the safe movement and support of individuals in healthcare and care settings. This includes activities such as:
Assisting a person to stand, sit, or walk
Transferring from bed to chair
Supporting people during daily routines, such as toileting or bedtime care
Manoeuvring a person safely in restricted or awkward spaces
Responding safely to a fall or emergency situation
In contrast, manual handling involves the movement of inanimate loads, such as equipment, beds, hoists, trolleys, waste, or medical supplies.
Both are covered in line with guidance from the Health Service Executive, where preventing musculoskeletal injury—particularly back injury—is a key priority in healthcare and community settings.
Why Patient Handling Training Matters
Manual handling injuries remain one of the leading causes of workplace injury in Ireland, especially in healthcare, home care, disability services, and nursing environments.
Effective training helps to:
Reduce the risk of back, shoulder, and musculoskeletal injuries
Improve confidence and competence when assisting service users
Promote service user dignity, safety, and independence
Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation
Support safer workplaces for both staff and service users
At SkillWise, training is practical, realistic, and scenario-based—not box-ticking.

✅ No need to travel far.
Many of our participants are nurses working through agencies across the Midlands, where moving between hospitals, nursing homes, and community settings is part of daily work. Having current Patient Handling & Moving training is essential when adapting to new environments, layouts, and equipment in Athlone, Roscommon, Longford and surrounding areas.
With SkillWise, there is no need to travel far for training. The course is delivered locally in the Midlands, and because the manual handling theory is completed online in your own time via SkillWise, the in-person requirement is a focused 4-hour practical session only. This flexible structure suits nurses balancing agency shifts, travel, and changing schedules, while still ensuring training is practical, compliant, and relevant across multiple care settings.
