🏗️ Industry News | Who Has to Get Manual Handling Training?
When it comes to workplace safety training, it’s important to look at two viewpoints:
1️⃣ The individual employee
2️⃣ The employer’s legal obligation, protection & reassurance

🚑 First Aid vs 🧱 Manual Handling – what’s the difference?
First Aid
For First Aid, the legal requirement is that a sufficient number of employees are trained. The goal is that, in an emergency, there are designated members of staff who know how to respond and provide support until emergency services arrive.
Not every individual employee needs First Aid training — as long as there are enough trained responders on site.
Manual Handling
Manual Handling is different.
Here, the focus is on the individual employee. If a person’s role involves lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repetitive movement, then that individual requires Manual Handling training.
It cannot be covered by “one trained person” on behalf of others.
👷 Who typically requires Manual Handling Training?
I regularly deliver Manual Handling training for:
Office-based staff, where tasks may include repetitive movements, handling boxes, files, or equipment
Training centres, including canteen and facilities staff
Construction workers, where Manual Handling is essential due to the nature of the work
Creches and schools, where staff may lift chairs, equipment, or children
Nurses & Carers as well as Staff, Patient Handling and Moving requires a valid Manual Handling Cert
In short:👉 If lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repetitive movement is part of the job, Manual Handling training is required.
⚖️ Why this matters legally
Around one third of all workplace injuries reported to the HSA are caused by manual handling activities. These injuries are also a leading cause of work-related disability.
From a legal and practical perspective:✔️ Training reduces injury risk✔️ Protects employees long-term✔️ Provides clear protection and reassurance for employers✔️ Demonstrates that appropriate steps were taken to reduce risk
✅ Key takeaway
Unlike First Aid or Fire Safety Awareness, Manual Handling is not a “train a few staff” course. It applies to each individual carrying out those tasks.
